I have been practicing drawing with my left hand, to give my wrist a break and to improve my 'seeing' skills. Sometimes I focus more on what I am seeing when I'm deterred by my slow-performing left hand. (: It's kind of like I'm a different artist with my left hand; the lack of control makes my work more sketchy in a good way, but also less confident. Practice make perfect!

This is my second self portrait done from life. I feel so much more confident drawing from life! It's like my vision is cleared, and I can see more accurately. This was drawn with nu pastel, which I haven't used in a while and I forgot how much I loved it. I think I did portray the feeling of depth some, but I could definitely improve on that.
We recently moved to Virginia and I LOVE it! It's so beautiful and full of culture and history. I explored Historic Yorktown, and did some landscape painting. It had just rained, and the fog filled this field and the trees almost disappeared. So amazing! I love painting the contrast between the chroma filled forefront and the hazy background. I'm also using a new color in my palette. I added naples yellow, made by Old Holland. It's almost a warm white, with just a hint of yellow. I love finding new colors! I haven't changed my palette in over a year, even though I try new colors. It's hard to find a color that you want to add to your palette for good.
I have been reading Sherrie McGraw's book "The Language of Drawing, From an Artists Viewpoint" (Which is fanstastic!) Towards the end of the book she has a section of artists' work that inspires her, one of the artists is George Carlson. His work is absolutely amazing! I have been sketching a little differently, incorporating Sherrie Mcgraw's "draw the air around the figure" advice and George Carlson's style. I think my draughtsmanship skills have already improved. My thought process is such a major factor in how successful my work is. Surrounding myself with the highest quality art and the best books makes my work so much better!
I have been doing a little bit of abstract work on the side, just for the fun of it. I really like this one.
Hey everyone, I know it has been a while. I am busy getting ready for a Solo Exhibition opening
October 7th at The Fine Arts Gallery on historic 25th in Ogden, UT More information coming soon, I hope you all can make it out sometime during the month to see the show! This is a portrait of a little girl that is friends with Cora. She is so beautiful, I just had to paint her. I remember years ago painting a portrait and not being able to see subtle warms and cools. It was so discouraging! But when I was painting this portrait, I could see so many colors that I couldn't paint them all. It was so exciting!
